Review: The House Girl

The House GirlThe House Girl by Tara Conklin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I knew when I read the blurb I would love this book, but I wasn't prepared for how much I would. I loved every single moment spent with Josephine and Lina. Different periods in time, but coming together for one incredible read. I really loved reading about Josephine and Missus Lu. They were my favorite.

You will get a mystery or 2 in this dear read. Enjoy every second of it! It is well worth it. 1852, Josephine is owned my Missus and Mister -- but after Missus dies there is no record of her. Or is there? Conklin brings all together with artwork. Lina is in 2004, a first year in the law practice, assigned to a case that is going to be a first, naming slaves and getting what should be owed to them back.

There is also a bit of romance tucked in here, each savory word Conklin wrote regardless, was out of this world fanastic. She is an excellent writer and I can't wait to tell everyone in February to go get this book! Make sure you do, you don't want to miss out!

Review: The Witch of Hebron

The Witch of Hebron: A World Made by Hand NovelThe Witch of Hebron: A World Made by Hand Novel by James Howard Kunstler
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Knock my socks off WOW! I am disappointed I didn't get myself into this book sooner. What we know as "life" changes with the government and everything else ceasing. No electricity, no gasoline -- basically back to the early 1900's. Horses, bartering for what you need; the good ole days. Even for crimes commited.

A few different storylines going on in this fantastic read. You will grow to love each one, with the good and bad. It all comes together in an excellent ending. I recommend this book to everyone. Makes you really think what if everything we know, technology etc ceases to exist. I can't wait to read some of Kunstler's other books.

Even the witch was exciting. So much description, you could feel the energy!

Tuesday goals!

Good morning! Tuesday is here. Can't believe it is already the middle of Nov almost! This year has flown by. So my goals for this week are: to finish The Witch of Hebron by James Howard Kunstler read and finish The Opposite of Art by Athol Dickson read and finish The Train of Small Mercies by David Rowell and read and finish The House Girl by Tara Conklin On facebook we have started an online book club. If you are interested in joining we are going to read A Christmas Carol by Dickens starting next week! While we are preparing for A Christmas Carol to begin on November 19, please be sure to buy the UNABRIDGED version, or check out a copy from your library... they're sure to have several copies of this classic! Unabridged is important, otherwise so much good content is taken out and watered down. In the meantime, while you're waiting for the study to begin, (warning: shameless plug!) be sure to check out Shandy's blog, Aprons 'n Pearls, at http://aprons-n-pearls.blogspot.com/ Be sure to join our site/subscribe/follow us! ♥ Thanks!

Review: White Truffles in Winter

White Truffles in WinterWhite Truffles in Winter by N.M. Kelby
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book made me extremely hungry. I have never heard of Escoffier and so this book opened new doors for me. His relationship with his wife Delphine is a bit odd and a tad complicated. Maybe because he had an affair with Sarah. The character that spoke to me the most was the maid, Sabine. Although she was slow and not really wanting to work, I like how much she worked at the end and was learning about cooking.

Every page was a picture anew, full of plates of food, images of things unique. I appreciate the author's details in every page. The description of the Red Dinner was beyond amazing, I felt as if I could feel each thing as he said it. Kelby is a very talented author and I wish to read more!

I did give it 4 stars because, in some parts I just felt a bit lost, other than those moments, I was so engrossed in this novel, I felt bereaved when it ended.

I received a copy of this novel from first reads on Goodreads in exchange for my honest opinion.

Review: The Comfort of Lies

The Comfort of LiesThe Comfort of Lies by Randy Susan Meyers
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

An affair that ended with a child being born. The child gets adopted by a couple where the "mom" isn't sure she is cut out to be a mom. Then we have the husband and wife torn apart by the affair and then topples more when five years later the wife finds out a child was born because of it.

When the 3 women intersect, the fireworks begin. Tia drifts here and there, always wondering if her and Nathan would have been and if she should have kept Savannah.

Juliette is trying to come to terms with the affair and the child she doesn't share with her husband. Caroline enjoys her work sometimes more than she enjoys Savannah, but does that make her a bad mother?

All of this comes together in a perfect tale, only told by Meyers. After her first book I couldn't wait for the next. My only problem really with this book is in some parts, I could have missed it and not cared. Doesn't take away from the story though!

I received a copy of this book from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
