Review: Hush Little Baby

Hush Little BabyHush Little Baby by Suzanne Redfearn
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Holy smokes. Talk about a nail biter! It appears the Kanes are the perfect family. Dad, Gordon is a police officer. By all accounts, he appears to be the perfect husband and father as well. Jillian is an ok mom, but doesn't get involved in the kids' school life, seems to be more into her work life.

But what happens behind closed doors. The abuse no one talks about. Everyone hides. When Jillian has had enough, one night, she tells Gordon when they are in the garage in the car she is going to leave them, and she is shocked when he says ok. Then he walks into the house. But Jill should have known it wasn't going to be so simple. He locked her out. Then things get worse. She kidnaps the children, so to speak, and hides out, until Addie is really ill and has to go to the hospital. Turns out she has cancer.

So Jillian is arrested. She is released on bail. Her friend, Connor, is an attorney and tells her basically they need to "declaw the tiger".

Find out how it all goes down in this thrilling book!! I loved each page. I couldn't help but tell all those around me what was going on and then eagerly get back to it. This would make an excellent movie!!

Review: You Knew Me When

You Knew Me WhenYou Knew Me When by Emily Liebert
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I stayed up in ONE night to read this book. Kitty and Laney were best friends, after Kitty and her dad moved to Manchester. Kitty's mom had been killed in a freak accident. Kitty is reserved, overweight she feels and the total opposite of Laney! Laney is beautiful, outgoing and her parents give her whatever her heart desires. Maybe that is why their relationship worked.

Anyway, at the beginning, both ladies are summoned to an attorney's office to read Luella's will. Luella is the lady that lived in a house between their houses. She took a liking to both girls, but more to Kitty, as you will find out why later in the book. Anyway, both ladies are listed to be the beneficiaries of all of her possessions and the house. They have talked in 12 years, after Kitty broke Laney's brother, Grant's heart. Will they be able to put their feelings aside to sell all of the items in Luella's house or will all the anger and rage they have for each other destroy everything?

We go back and forth from past to present, between the two perspectives. I loved both of them, but I really liked Katherine, or Kitty. Kitty seemed so hurt but so real and I loved both of the sense of humors. From Laney's perspective, she is also dealing with her teenage daughter. If you love books about women's relationships, love, family and loss, this is the book for you! Heck if you love to read this is the book for you! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

Review: Hen of the Baskervilles

Hen of the Baskervilles (Meg Langslow, #15)Hen of the Baskervilles by Donna Andrews
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A dastardly murder and the kidnapping of a prize chicken threaten to ruin Caerphilly’s state fair—fortunately, Meg Langslow is on the case of The Hen of the Baskervilles

The newest mystery in Donna Andrews's gut-bustingly funny, award-winning, New York Times bestselling series is anything but elementary. Meg Langslow is helping Mayor Randall Shiffley organize the Virginia Un-Fair, Caerphilly’s entry in the race to replace the old state fair (which has gone bankrupt). Before a line can even form outside the ticket booth, however, a pair of Bantam Russian Orloff chickens are stolen from their coop in the chicken tent. Soon, a rash of vandalism crops up at the fair, showing no heritage farm animal, prize vegetable, or artisanal craft to be safe.

While patrolling the fairgrounds, determined to catch the perp, Meg runs into her friend Molly, who has been building a successful business making goat cheeses. Molly is terrified that she may lose her farm because her idle husband Brett has left her for Genette Sedgewick, a rich hobby winemaker, and is demanding his half of the land. Meg enlists Mother's help to find Molly a divorce lawyer, but later that night, Brett is found murdered and Molly is swiftly accused as his killer.

Meg is convinced that her friend wouldn’t so much as harm a fly, but can she find the real killer before it’s too late? Will she track down the vandal who has been terrorizing—however creatively—the fair’s participants? And will Michael be able to convince her to add members of his new favorite heritage breed to their growing menagerie? Meg’s most hilarious caper yet, the curious incident of the hen in the nighttime will have readers rolling on the floor with laughter.

My first Meg mystery, I know it won't be the last! I enjoyed the whodunit and the author made it tons of fun in between. You actually learn a bit about chickens, llamas and more! I did enjoy quite the cast of characters. That being said, I had to give it four stars because I felt a bit at times as if it dragged on.

I felt pulled all over the place and distracted when Meg's personal thoughts came into play. Towards the end I started to get clues as to who our murderer MIGHT be, but it was fun none the less.

I know I will be checking out the other Meg mysteries, too much fun to not!

Review: One Pink Line

One Pink LineOne Pink Line by Dina Silver
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

6 hours it took for me to read this fantastic read. We alternate back and forth between past and present, Sydney and her daughter Grace. Sydney fell in love with Ethan, but ended up pregnant with a friend from college's baby during an overnighter, and they weren't in love and Kevin didn't want anything to do with the baby.

But Grace never knew that her "dad" wasn't her dad, that her biological dad was someone different. And then you have a whole other host of characters, moms, dads, sisters and friends. All wacky in their own way, and this book was just so excellent, I don't even have words. I cried. I cried several times. I mean, Ethan's mom was so gracious during everything and Kevin's mom and sister equally so.

Authors like this make it hard to get anything else done. But it sure was a good way to spend a Sunday. And I hear that Ms Silver has a new book out, I am doubly excited to get my hands on that one now!!! I received a copy of this book from Goodreads First Read program in exchange for an honest opinion.

Review: Happy Any Day Now

Happy Any Day NowHappy Any Day Now by Toby Devens
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Great escape! Judith is loveable in that quirky, downhome way. Her mom, Grace, is just as likeable. I mean how often do you get a Jewish/Oriental lady? One that is turning 50, still not married and no children. And although I think that she might have wanted it, I think Judith really learns a lot about herself and what she wants.

I was rooting for Geoff from the beginning. I have to say, EVERY character is very likeable and so much fun to read. A lot of parts you will laugh out loud. But there is a point to all of it. Judith really learns, sometimes what we loved and liked when we were younger isn't always as grand as it seemed.

I loved how there was a climax, of the relationships with the 2 men, Geoff and Charlie. Then you have Judith coming to terms with her father coming back into her and her mother's lives. Also, you have a new opportunity with the symphony -- lots of changes coming for Judith. Can she make it without having a panic attack and needing a little blue pill?

Pick it up, let Judith, her mother and all the characters of this wonderful book into your mind for a weekend. I promise you will adore them, and they might stay awhile!

I hope Devens doesn't stay a stranger with the literary world!
