Review: Helen Keller in Love

Helen Keller in Love: A NovelHelen Keller in Love: A Novel by Rosie Sultan
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Well where do I begin? What started out as a promising, endearing love story of a girl that went against all odds. But after the first 100 pages, it dragged out for me making it very painful to finish. Even though Helen was blind and deaf, with the help of Annie, Helen learned how to communicate and became a fascinating young woman.

However, when Annie becomes sick, Peter is hired to be Helen's secretary. Helen is taken with Peter and falls in love with him. When he asks her to marry him, they keep it a secret but the press gets wind of it and Helen's family is alerted -- Peter is chased off.

Will they defy everyone and get married, or is Peter just around for the fame? Find out, and maybe just maybe the book will go quicker for you!

Review: True Sisters

True SistersTrue Sisters by Sandra Dallas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Fantastic! Excellent! Outstanding. Need I say more? What starts out with a lot of characters, which might overwhelm the reader at first, ends up not being enough! Just kidding. Honestly, this book was outstanding. I love learning a little, but also what a tale.

Based on journals and diaries Dallas had read, this is a heart-warming story of the trek across the US that Mormom followers made. Heartbreaking as well at times. So many of them didn't make it but they sure were more courageous and obedient than I think we would be today.

What started out as a good idea with the handcarts, ended up being a catastrophe. Not only were the carts made with wood that wasn't sturdy, there wasn't any provisions along the way. They ended up losing, leaving or selling most of their belongings. Beaten down by weather, sickness and a handful of other reasons, so many gave up. Losing each other and their spirits in the process.

Also, polygamy was a big part of their religion and something each woman battled with I do believe.

So many to root for in this exceptional harrowing tale --- read it TODAY!

A review and an author visit with Jonell Kirby Cash

A Ring, a Dance, a Second ChanceA Ring, a Dance, a Second Chance by Jonell Kirby Cash
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Jonell Kirby Cash's love story picks up Katie and Taylor's romance right where it left off, their senior year of high school. However, Katie isn't the same girl Taylor remembers. As a widow, she values her independence, living alone, and making new friends, and when Taylor calls Katie she is on the threshold of exploring herself in the larger world. Taylor, ever the old-fashioned man, is surprised by the new, vibrant Katie. The two must learn how to rid themselves of their old memories and expectations and learn to accept the fifty years of change that has taken place.www.dyeingtolive.blogspot.com

View all my reviews WOW! Where do I begin? This book goes so in depth, I felt as if I was Katie -- Katie's husband passed away a couple of years previous. Katie gets a phone call one day from a high school boyfriend, Taylor. Taylor would like to visit with her. Both of them have had marriages, spouses both deceased. They both have had good lives, kids, grandchildren. Would it be wise to reconnect? What will happen after that? All these questions running through their minds. Will it be like it used to be between them? Another person has the hots for Katie as well. Her daughter's Pastor. Ugh! He is creepy. You will love reading all the sides and seeing what happens with Katie and Taylor. And why Reverend Fullerton is so creepy in my opinion! What will their kids reactions be if they decide to see each other? Can you ever really find love after being married and your spouse dying? Jonell left it open for more to come, so I foresee another visit with Katie in my future! I really enjoyed reading this book. It gave me great insight to Jonell too I believe Katie is probably quite a bit molded after her! Bravo Jonell, fantastic debut! _______________________________ * Is “A Ring, A Dance, A Second Chance” based on your own life? Certainly the story line was based on an a real incident (see brief bio) and my target audience was based on self observations, the changing expectations we have for our lives and our extended life span; however, the story is a melding of ideas, beliefs, experiences--observed and lived. Thus it is fiction. * Who is your favorite Character? Katie was my favorite character because I identify with her: I saw her change from a woman who never quite stepped out of the shadow of her husband, nor did she totally let go of the cultural expectations that helped define her. Taylor’s call brought excitement and energy into Katie’s life, and also a fear that letting him into her life again could be disruptive. Katie made the decision to see Taylor, because she wanted to; however, she also continued to express her independence by letting Taylor know what she wanted and she redefine what it meant to be a wife. This was a learning experience for Katie: she realized that whatever she did meant change. In the story, when Katie embraced change she gained a sense of comfort and competency and was able to assert her preferences, raise issues, and take equal responsibility for the decision she and Taylor made as a couple. * Have you always wanted to write a book? I have authored academic books and published academic materials but I had never written a novel—but had always “dreamed” I would. When I started this novel my main interest was to learn how to write a novel, to understand the creation of characters, and find a story that, when written, could depict truth more clearly than reality. Writing this novel was a labor of love, a learning experience and total enjoyment. * Do you have plans to write more? Now that I have this first novel written and am in the midst of book event and interacting with the reading public, I’ve enjoyed another phase of the writing process and I keep learning about myself. I’ll keep following my passion, so at this point I am beginning to think about writing a sequel, and I’ve been asked to do so by quite a few individuals who have read my book. Brief bio of Jonell Kirby Cash: Dr Jonell Kirby Cash, a highly recognized author in the academic fields of Psychology and Counseling, is now retired, and at age 82 her first novel, A RING, A DANCE, A SECOND CHANCE (Tate, 2011), resonates with older readers whose lives were once cluttered with people--and now live alone. In 1999, widowed, and in her 70’s, Jonell sold her residence and bought a new home with an eye for being comfortably situated as a single parent of adult children; she enjoyed her work as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer; she lived alone, but still felt married--though she acknowledged that independence had its own rewards--then, out of the blue, her high school sweetheart , Tom Cash, called (Tom was widowed—he was looking for a wife. Because Jonell had moved, Tom had trouble finding her and he was fearful that he was too late, this time around. Tom made his plan and fears obvious when, first thing, he asked Katie if she was involved with someone --or married). Jonell is now busy with book related activities. Please visit www.jonellkirbycash.net for more information and to leave messages. Three things I learned from writing this book: 1) Viewing the experience as a whole, I learned that writing a novel in my senescence (I’m 82) was as easy—and as difficult—as writing a publishable book length document at any age. . One of the interesting experiences I had as I wrote this novel was that I dug deep and used my own feelings/reactions to identify with and feel, and then describe what was going on. In that sense, I was my own lab. 2) “Show, don’t tell” was the most difficult concept I gleaned from the advice of successful writers and teachers; also, “show, don’t tell,” was the most valuable concept that I struggled to master. 3) Finding a story idea from my own developmental issues and creating characters to tell the story was an amazing and enriching experience. My developmental issues were those common to women approaching midlife: this story captures the emotions of Katie’s and Taylor’s reunion, more than forty years after high school. As they revisit their sweet memories of first love, and flirt with the fantasy of what might-have-been, the two widows fan the embers of love and talk about the possibility their future stretching out into a couple more decades and they worry about the reality of what it means to their adult children for their parent to pursue a significant relationship and create a new family. Sincere Thanks, Jonell Kirby Cash

Misfortune Cookie

Misfortune CookieMisfortune Cookie by Michele Gorman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Oh Hannah how I love you! Hannah is one of my favorite leading ladies. She makes me laugh non-stop. She is clumsy, awkward at times and just generally like me. This is the second book where Hannah follows her boyfriend from London to Hong Kong. Sam doesn't ask her to move, but she does. Might be a bit easier that when she just up and moved from the US to London, not knowing anyone there, or even having a job lined up.

Once again Hannah didn't get a work permit but she stumbled upon the perfect job. A fashion designer's assistant assistant. Can Hannah keep from fowling up this one? When she moves to Hong Kong in the hopes of moving in with, falling in love with and marrying Sam, her dreams come crashing down on her when he tells her that he will be on location at another job, but will be able to visit every so often.

The only thing that cushions that blow is the fact that Hannah's best friend from the States, Stacy, is coming to Hong Kong too to work and therefore Hannnah now has an ally in Hong Kong.

Hannah learns a lot about herself, life and what she is all about while in Hong Kong. In fact it looks like Hong Kong was the best move ever for her. Things are great with Sam, or are they?

Read this book. You DON'T want to miss out. I am telling you, Michele is so awesome at writing. It went way too quick and I am sad. I need another Hannah fix SOON! Michele really leaves you dangling on this one with so many questions!!!

Review: Caring for a Loved One with Cancer

Caring for a Loved One with CancerCaring for a Loved One with Cancer by June Hunt
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book is a must. These days, everyone knows someone with cancer, so this book would be a huge blessing to them. I know because I know someone that has cancer and this really opened my eyes and helped me think of more ways I could be a blessing to them.

June's use of verses for all 50 ways to care for your loved one was beautiful. What an amazing thing to have gone through it and be a blessing to so many. Indeed "a word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver" Proverbs 25:11.

Such a beautiful cover too, brings a tranquility to me when I see it.

After the 50 different ways to care for your loved one during cancer, June talks about not forgetting the children and some other important inforation, including if you don't know Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

Would be a good book to put in a basket of a family going through a time like this, whether they have cancer or some other serious illness.

Review: All Our Worldly Goods

All Our Worldly GoodsAll Our Worldly Goods by Irène Némirovsky
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Thank goodness it is over! What was promising from the blurb on the back cover to be a good book, quickly fell short. A multigenerational love/war story, gone bad quickly.

Agnes and Pierre are engaged to other people, but they get married despite all the controversy. Simone, who Pierre was engaged to becomes an owner in his family factory, instead of Pierre. Pierre's grandpa can't forgive him for marrying Agnes.

And the story goes on, and on and on. Underneath all these boring layers, I feel there is a sweeping love story, something beautiful. However I think it got lost in translation.

Still, I smile, because it is over.

Received a free copy on goodreads.

Review: Woodrose Mountain

Evie comes down the hill, refreshed from her run only to have Brodie Thorne interrupt her peace. Brodie is always on the opposite side of Evie. If she said it was black he would say it is white. So what he could want puzzled Evie. When she led him up to the small apartment she has over String Fever, the bead shop she works in, she wonders what she had done to make him upset again. However Evie is blown away to find out he wants her to help in the rehabilitation of his daughter who was seriously injured in a car accident that left another girl dead and another boy, Charlie in hot water. Evie doesn't think she can open her heart again to doing physical therapy again. Ever since her adopted daughter Cassie passed away, Evie has been running from her former life. But will Brodie and his mother, Katherine, Evie's good friend end up getting Evie to help Taryn regain some of what she lost? The dynamics are all set for a perfect explosion. Tension between Evie and Brodie becomes more than just hatred; it might actually appear to border something on the dreaded L word... When Evie runs into Charlie and enlists his help in Taryn's physical therapy, Brodie is livid. How can Evie have the boy responsible for this mess help, in his own home no less? These small gems in your hands, so perfect to read. Especially in one sitting. RaeAnne Thayne builds such a wonderful little world in Hope's Crossing. I myself am from Colorado so I really enjoyed the fall descriptions. It is beyond beautiful and Thayne did the descriptions justice. This one is the second of three about Hope's Crossing, but you can read each one without reading Blackberry Summer, but it does help to have that background. I know for me personally the last one will come out and my time will end at Hope's Crossing way too quick. But until it does, it will be fun to speculate who the last book will be about!! Thanks Ms Thayne for a wonderful read.

Review: Life Changing Conversations

Life-Changing Conversations: 7 Strategies for Talking About What Matters MostLife-Changing Conversations: 7 Strategies for Talking About What Matters Most by Sarah Rozenthuler
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Could be life changing for anyone! Lots of practical advice, several different scenarios gone over that each person might be able to put themselves into. Marriage, jobs, confrontations in almost every part of our lives.

I never thought about conversations as being that deep or that much work! I really liked the job one though. I am not sure in marriage if it should be I am going to do what I want. That is my reasoning for the 4 stars. When you are married, it isn't just about you.

The Bible was quoted in here, so maybe it should be quoted for marriage help too. That isn't what the Bible wants you to do. Also, the Bible clearly states the heart is wicked. So be careful when listening to your heart.

The excercises in the back are thought provoking and will lead you onto a richer deeper communication with others.

I received a copy on netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
